Battery Light On (P0562): Test Belt and Cables Before a New Alternator

When the battery-shaped warning light comes on, the reflex quote is a new alternator. But the light only means the car's computer sees lower voltage than it should — and that voltage travels through a drive belt, a charging cable and several grounds before it proves anything about the alternator itself. Skip testing that path and you can pay for the expensive part while keeping the original problem. What code P0562 means
P0562 is a generic OBD-II code that reads "System Voltage Low." It sets when the engine control module sees system voltage below its expected threshold for a sustained period. Two things matter:

- Companion codes narrow things down: P0563 (system voltage high) points at regulation, and generator-circuit codes in the P0620 range point at the alternator's control wiring.

Four candidates exist, ranked by likelihood. Alternator output failure, from worn brushes, a failed regulator or a bad diode, is the most common single cause. Corroded or loose cables and grounds are the classic misdiagnosis, since resistance in the path stops charge arriving regardless of the alternator. Next comes the free and cheap inspection, belt, tensioner, terminals, cables and grounds, before voltage-drop testing the circuit and finally load-testing the alternator.

A damaged battery adds €100–250. The honest question is not "how much is an alternator" but "which of these did the tests point at". A quote that starts at the expensive end without a written voltage-drop reading is an incomplete diagnosis.
