  3. Open the airbox and look at the filter. Hold it to the light. If daylight barely passes, that is worth fixing first.
  4. Read the fuel trims at idle and at a steady cruise. Trims correcting well positive mean the engine is short of fuel or drawing uncounted air. A large correction at idle that settles at cruise points to a vacuum leak, since a fixed leak matters less as airflow rises.

  7. Measure fuel pressure under load, not at idle. A tired pump often holds specification at idle and sags only under volume, so an idle reading will mislead you.
  8. Only then test for an exhaust restriction, through manifold vacuum or back-pressure. A healthy engine holds steady vacuum at idle; a reading that falls away as revs are held is the result to act on.

At the cheap end, a filter and a split hose are inexpensive parts, cleaning a sensor or throttle body is mostly labour, and spark plugs are routine servicing. A vacuum leak is usually a hose or a gasket, not anything structural.

The expensive end is genuinely expensive — a fuel pump, a catalytic converter, turbo work, a gearbox — which is why the order above matters. Before authorising any of those, ask what was measured, not suspected: fuel pressure under load, back-pressure, the trim values. A quote naming an expensive part without a measurement is guesswork.
