A single-cylinder misfire is one of the most common check-engine complaints — and one of the easiest to over-quote. Code P0301 says cylinder 1 is misfiring, and the possible fixes run from a spark plug to a head gasket. That spread is why some quotes fire the parts cannon: coils, plugs and injectors, "to be safe." The honest first move costs almost nothing: swap the suspect coil to another cylinder and see if the misfire follows. What code P0301 means

P0301 is a generic OBD-II code: "Cylinder 1 — misfire detected." The engine control module watches crankshaft speed; when cylinder 1's firing events repeatedly fail to push the crank, the code sets.

Three things matter here:

  • The code names a cylinder, not a part. It tells you where the problem is, never what it is.
  • "Cylinder 1" is the manufacturer's numbering, not necessarily the first one you see — confirm your engine's layout before touching anything.
  • A flashing check-engine light means the misfire is severe enough to damage the catalytic converter — ease off and get the car looked at promptly.

  4. Vacuum leak at that cylinder. An intake manifold gasket leaking near the cylinder-1 runner leans out that cylinder — typically a misfire at idle that improves under load.
  5. Low compression. A burnt valve, worn rings or a failing head gasket. The most expensive outcome and the least common; genuine mechanical failure usually brings corroborating evidence — coolant loss, smoke, oil consumption — not an isolated P0301.

Diagnostic steps (in order)

  1. Scan and record freeze-frame data. Note when the misfire happens (cold start, idle, load) and check for companion codes — P0300, lean or injector-circuit codes each reshape the diagnosis.
  2. Coil swap test. Move the cylinder-1 coil to another cylinder, clear the code, and drive. If the misfire follows, the misfire code changes to match the new cylinder — e.g., P0303 if you moved the coil to cylinder 3 — and the coil is confirmed. If P0301 stays on cylinder 1, the coil is ruled out.
  3. Spark plug inspection and swap. Same logic as the coil. The plug's condition is evidence in itself: oil fouling points at valve stem seals or rings; an unusually clean, washed-looking plug can mean coolant entering the cylinder.
  4. Injector test. Swap injectors where practical, or verify the injector electrically and listen for its operation. A misfire that follows the injector confirms it.
  5. Vacuum-leak check. Smoke-test the intake, or listen and carefully spray around the cylinder-1 runner while watching for an idle change — remember the idle-misfire-improves-under-load signature from the causes list. An intake gasket is a far cheaper fix than anything the next step points to.
  6. Compression or leak-down test. If spark, fuel and intake sealing are ruled out, the cause is likely mechanical. A low reading on cylinder 1 confirms it; a leak-down test locates the leak — valves, rings, or into the cooling system.
  7. Head gasket confirmation. If leak-down points at the cooling system, confirm with a chemical test for combustion gases in the coolant — a repair decision this expensive shouldn't rest on guesswork.

The measurement behind P0301 is the same crankshaft-speed test that sets P0300, run over the same two windows (200 revolutions for catalyst-damaging rate, 1,000 for the emissions rate). What changes is the attribution. The computer knows the firing order and the crank position, so a weak kick can be assigned to a specific cylinder.

That is why P0301 carries information P0300 does not. The fault lives in one cylinder's ignition, fuel or compression, and the shared causes drop down the list: a vacuum leak or weak fuel supply would spread misfires across cylinders rather than concentrate them in number one.

The free test follows directly from the mechanism. Move the suspect coil to a neighbouring cylinder, clear the code, and drive it. If the code comes back as P0302 the part is confirmed. If it stays P0301, the part is ruled out and the next question is what that cylinder is doing mechanically, not which part to buy next.

Values worth having before anyone quotes engine work: cylinders should read within roughly 10% of each other on a compression or relative-compression test. One cylinder 15% to 20% down is the point where a proper compression or leak-down test earns its cost. A full set of plugs varies with engine access but sits in similar territory. An injector usually runs a few hundred euros fitted. A head gasket is a four-figure repair on most engines. If a quote jumps to the expensive end without a documented swap test and compression reading, ask for the evidence — or get a second opinion.
