Code P0420 (Catalyst Efficiency): Diagnose Before You Buy a Converter

P0420 is one of the most common check-engine codes — and one of the most expensive to get wrong. The reflex quote is a new catalytic converter, often a four-figure job. But the code does not say "catalyst dead" — it says the ECU compared two oxygen-sensor signals and didn't like the result. Cheaper faults produce the same signature, and even a dead converter was usually killed by something upstream — replace it without finding the killer and you pay twice.

What code P0420 means

P0420 reads "Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1)" — the cylinder-1 side of a V engine, or simply the whole exhaust on an inline engine. Its twin P0430 covers Bank 2.

The ECU compares the oxygen sensor before the catalyst with the one after it. A healthy catalyst stores and releases oxygen, so the downstream sensor should trace a comparatively steady line. Upstream, older narrowband sensors switch rapidly at cruise, while most cars from roughly the mid-2000s onward use a wideband air/fuel-ratio sensor that holds steady near lambda 1.0 — a flat front trace there is normal. When the downstream signal turns busy and starts mirroring engine transients, the ECU declares oxygen-storage capacity below threshold and sets P0420.

The key point: this is an inference from two sensor signals, not a direct measurement. Anything that corrupts either signal — a sluggish sensor, outside air leaking in, unstable fuelling — can set the code with a serviceable catalyst in place.

Symptoms to confirm

P0420 usually presents with nothing but the light. Most cars with this code drive normally, which is why it goes ignored until an emissions test. Where other symptoms do appear they are mild: a sulphur smell, a small loss of economy, or a rattle underneath. The code returning soon after a clear is the strongest sign it is real.

Likely causes, ranked

The catalyst itself is only one of five candidates, and it is rarely the thing that went wrong first. Ranked by how often each turns out to be the real answer: a degraded catalyst with an upstream root cause, a lazy oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak near a sensor, misfire or fuel-trim faults, and oil or coolant contamination.

  1. A genuinely degraded catalyst — usually with an upstream root cause. Catalysts rarely die of old age alone; misfires, rich running or oil consumption typically did the damage. A high-mileage converter may truly need replacing — but the killer still needs finding.
  2. A lazy or failing downstream (or upstream) oxygen sensor. Sensors slow down with age: a sluggish downstream sensor can mimic a bad catalyst, and a degraded upstream one skews the comparison.
  3. Exhaust leaks near the sensors. A cracked manifold, leaking flex pipe, failed gasket or loose sensor bung lets outside air reach the sensors, corrupting the readings the efficiency test depends on.
  4. Misfires and fuel-trim faults. Unburned fuel from a misfire, or a vacuum leak driving the trims far from centre, overwhelms the catalyst's chemistry — setting P0420 while actively cooking the converter.
  5. Oil or coolant contamination. A leaking head gasket, worn valve stem seals or heavy oil consumption poison the substrate. A new cat fitted into this environment fails the same way.

Diagnostic steps (in order)

Work from the cheapest signal towards the most expensive part. Read all codes and the freeze frame first, because a misfire or trim code both causes P0420 and destroys a replacement converter. Then check fuel trims and misfire counters, compare the two oxygen sensor traces live, and hunt exhaust leaks before anyone prices a catalyst.

  1. Full code read with freeze frame. Misfire codes (P0300-series), fuel-trim codes (P0171/P0174) or oxygen-sensor heater codes must be chased first — they can both cause P0420 and destroy a replacement converter.
  2. Check fuel trims and misfire counters at idle and cruise. Trims near centre and zero misfires rule out the fuelling causes; large corrections or active misfires rule them in.
  3. Compare upstream and downstream O2 waveforms live. A narrowband upstream sensor switches busily at steady cruise, but most modern cars use a wideband/AFR sensor that reads a steady lambda ~1.0 — don't condemn it for being flat. Judge the downstream trace instead: relatively steady is healthy; growing switching that mirrors engine transients means depleted oxygen storage. Then force rich and lean transitions — a slow, lazy downstream response points at the sensor rather than the catalyst.
  4. Inspect for exhaust leaks — visual check plus a smoke test around the manifold, flex pipe, joints and sensor bungs. A leak found here can be the whole diagnosis.
  5. Check for oil or coolant consumption: oil-level history, spark plug condition, coolant loss. Contamination means the root cause must be fixed alongside any converter.
  6. Only then condemn the catalyst — ideally by confirming the ECU's catalyst monitor fails again over a proper drive cycle.

What a fair repair should cost

An exhaust gasket or clamp can be a double-digit repair; a flex pipe or downstream oxygen sensor fitted typically lands in the low hundreds of euros, as do most misfire causes (plugs, a coil). The expensive end is the converter: a quality aftermarket unit fitted often runs several hundred euros, while OEM converters range from around €1,000 to well beyond €2,000. A quote that starts at the converter without documented sensor data, trims and a leak check skips the part of the job that protects your money.

FAQ

Can I keep driving with a P0420 code?

Usually yes — P0420 alone rarely causes an immediate drivability problem, though you'll fail an emissions test. The exception is a flashing check engine light or misfire codes alongside it: unburned fuel is then damaging the catalyst, and driving on turns a cheap fix into an expensive one.

Will replacing the downstream O2 sensor fix P0420?

Only if the sensor is actually the fault — a live-data check establishes that first. A lazy downstream sensor is a common cause, but swapping it blind is a gamble: if the catalyst or a leak is the true problem, the code comes straight back.

Do catalytic converter cleaner additives fix P0420?

No additive rebuilds a worn or melted substrate, and results on lightly contaminated catalysts are inconsistent at best. Treat cleaners as a low-cost experiment after diagnosis, not a substitute for finding out why the code set.
