Squealing Belt on Cold Start: Worn Belt, Tensioner, or Pulley?

A high-pitched squeal for the first minute after a cold start is one of the most common engine-bay noises — and one of the easiest to fix wrong. It invites two bad outcomes: an over-quote for every part on the front of the engine, or belt dressing that buys a week of silence and hides the real fault. The noise almost always comes from the accessory drive belt, and three things share the blame: the belt itself, the tensioner that keeps it tight, and the pulleys it runs over. Telling them apart takes about fifteen minutes.

  1. Worn or glazed belt. Modern EPDM belts rarely crack the way older belts did — they lose rib material gradually, so a worn belt can look fine. Less rib depth means less grip, and a marginal belt slips exactly when grip is worst: cold, damp, under alternator load.
  2. Weak or failing automatic tensioner. Its spring and damper fade with age. Low tension lets even a healthy belt slip, and a fluttering arm chews up the belt — the two problems often travel together.
  3. Pulley misalignment. A pulley sitting slightly out of plane — often after an alternator, water pump or tensioner replacement — makes the belt track at an angle and chirp, cold or warm. That chirp is continuous rather than locked to one point in the belt's loop: if the noise comes round once per belt loop, the belt itself is the suspect instead.
  4. Contaminated belt. An oil or coolant leak onto the belt destroys its grip. A new belt lasts only until the leak soaks it again — the leak is the real repair.
  5. A noisy bearing masquerading as belt squeal. Idlers, the tensioner pulley, the alternator and (on some engines) the water pump all have bearings that whine when worn — similar from the driver's seat, but no belt-focused fix will cure it.

  3. Inspect the belt, engine off. Look for glazed shiny ribs, rubber dust in the grooves, frayed edges, missing rib chunks, or oil and coolant contamination. On EPDM belts a rib-wear gauge is the honest check — eyes alone under-read wear on this material.
  4. Check the tensioner. With the engine running, watch the tensioner arm: it should hold nearly steady, and visible bouncing means the damper is worn. Engine off, move it through its travel with a wrench — it should feel smooth and firmly sprung, without binding or grinding.
  5. Spin the pulleys with the belt off. Each should turn smoothly and silently, with no wobble or play; roughness confirms a bearing fault. With the belt off, sight along the pulleys with a straightedge to confirm they sit in one plane.

What a fair repair should cost

Everything here sits at the cheap end of car repair. A serpentine belt is typically €20–60 as a part and roughly €80–200 fitted, depending on access; a tensioner adds around €50–150 in parts. A full drive-belt service — belt, tensioner and idler pulleys in one visit — commonly lands in the €200–450 range, often the smart buy on a higher-mileage car since the labour overlaps almost completely. What deserves pushback: replacing only the belt when the tensioner is weak (the squeal returns and you pay the labour twice), or a belt quote that never looked at the tensioner and pulleys. One honest exception: where access is tight or the belt also drives the water pump, labour rises — ask the shop to explain the layout. And skip the belt dressing: it buys days of silence, attracts grit, and hides the tension problem that caused the slip.
