Engine Overheating: Head Gasket or Something Cheaper?

A temperature gauge climbing into the red gets linked to a head gasket fast, often before anyone has looked properly. - A cooling fan that isn't running. The classic tell is fine at highway speed, where airflow is natural, but overheating in slow traffic. Suspect a fan motor, fan clutch, relay or temperature switch.
- A failing water pump. A worn impeller or bearing stops circulating coolant properly. Look for a drip at the weep hole, a wobbly pulley or a coolant trail down the front of the engine.
- A blocked radiator or trapped air. Debris, age or an incomplete bleed after service restricts flow; a blocked core often shows cold patches under an infrared thermometer.
- A head gasket. Real, but the least common cause here and the most quoted. It lets combustion gas into the coolant or coolant into the cylinders, hence bubbling, white exhaust, coolant loss with no external leak, and oil turned to paste. Confirm it with a test, not a guess. Some engine families have a long-standing reputation for it in the trade, and that reputation is worth checking against the specific engine's service history rather than treated as a diagnosis.
