Clicking Noise While Driving: CV Joint or Something Cheaper?

A click is the easiest noise in the car to throw parts at, because half a dozen different components click, and the expensive one gets blamed first. CV axles are the classic example: condemned for clicks they never made, while owners replace axles, then exhaust parts, with the click still there at the end. The fix is asking one question before touching a wrench: exactly when does it click?
The first question: when does it click?
Each clicking cause has a signature moment, so the timing of the click is most of the diagnosis. Clicking only while turning points one way, over bumps another, a single clack on and off the throttle a third, a tick that follows engine speed a fourth. Nail the moment, and the suspect list collapses to one or two.

Where the click lands on the timing map decides the suspect list; the CV joint owns only one of these signatures.
- Outer CV joint: clicks while turning. The genuine CV click is rhythmic, tracks wheel speed, and gets loud under power at full lock. A torn CV boot with grease flung around it supports the diagnosis. A click present going straight and quiet in corners points away from the joint.
- Sway bar end links and suspension bushings: clicks over bumps. Worn links, control arm bushings, and strut top mounts knock on rough pavement and stay silent on smooth roads. Cheaper than an axle, and more common.
- Driveline lash: one clack on throttle transitions. Worn engine or transmission mounts, a dry driveshaft slip yoke, a worn u-joint, or differential backlash produce a single clunk-click when torque reverses direction.
- Exhaust heat shields and manifold ticks: follows engine speed. A loose shield or a small exhaust leak ticks in time with the engine, often loudest cold and fading as metal expands. This one gets mistaken for everything, including lifters and axles.
- Brake hardware: one click per direction change. Pads shifting in their brackets make a single clack on the first brake apply after reversing, and loose caliper bolts click over bumps. Often just missing anti-rattle clips.
- Wheel-speed clickers: stones, lugs, covers. A stone wedged in the tread, a loose wheel cover, or a loose lug nut clicks in time with wheel rotation going straight. Check these before any driveline part.
Diagnostic steps (in order)
The tests mirror the timing map, and the first three need no tools at all.
- Free visual first, then the parking-lot circle test. Glance at the tread for stones and check wheel covers and lug nuts, then drive tight circles both directions, windows down, gentle throttle. Rhythmic clicking that follows the loaded side and wheel speed is a CV joint; confirm with a look at the boots for tears and flung grease.
- The bump test. Roll slowly over a speed bump or rough patch. Clicks only here point at links, bushings, or loose brake hardware; a helper bouncing each corner narrows it down.
- The throttle-transition test. At low speed, smoothly apply and release the throttle. A single clack each reversal is lash: mounts, slip yoke, u-joint, or diff, not a CV joint.
- The stationary test. Ticking with the car parked and engine running removes the whole driveline from the list: heat shields, exhaust leaks, or valvetrain; note whether it changes with revs.
- Wheel-off inspection of the noisy corner. Wiggle the sway bar link, check pad hardware and caliper bolts, torque the lugs, inspect the CV boot. Most clicks are found visually at this stage.
- Only then condemn an axle, and match the evidence: turning-dependent click plus a compromised boot. Replacing an axle for a straight-line click usually buys the same click plus a bill.
What a fair repair should cost
The cheap end dominates: a stone is free, anti-rattle clips and sway bar links are small parts, and a heat shield clamp is a minor job. Bushings and mounts climb into the low hundreds of euros with labour, and a single CV axle replacement typically lands in the mid hundreds fitted. The trap is paying axle money for a bump-click or a heat-shield tick, so ask the shop which timing signature they matched before approving driveline work.

- Can I keep driving with a clicking CV joint?
