Losing Coolant but No Visible Leak: Where to Look First

Coolant that keeps disappearing with no puddle under the car is one of the most over-diagnosed problems in a driveway: plenty of owners get quoted a head gasket for what turns out to be a loose clamp or a tired radiator cap.   • A sweet smell around the engine bay after a drive
  • White, sweet-smelling steam from the exhaust, especially at startup
  • Windshield fogging with a greasy film or a sweet smell inside the car, or a damp front carpet
  • White, green, pink or orange crust around hose ends, the water pump, or radiator seams
  • The low coolant light returns days or weeks after topping up

  1. Confirm the loss cold and note the rate. Same spot, same temperature, several days. A photo each morning beats memory, and the rate matters to the shop later.
  2. Do the free checks before renting anything. Look under the oil cap and at the dipstick for milky residue, check for fogged glass or a damp front carpet, and sniff the exhaust for sweet steam once warmed up. An obvious internal or cabin sign reframes the whole hunt.
  3. Pressure test the system cold. A hand pump on the cap neck (cheap to rent) pushes coolant out of the leak with the engine off, turning an invisible seep into a visible drip. Work a light around hose ends, the water pump weep hole, radiator seams and the thermostat housing.
  4. Test the cap itself. Most pressure testers include a cap adapter, and a cap that will not hold its rated pressure can be the whole problem.
  5. Still nothing? Add UV dye. Drive a few days, then scan with a UV light. Dye finds the leak that only opens up hot or under load.
  6. Get a combustion gas test before any head gasket verdict. A block tester sniffs the coolant for exhaust gases and settles the internal-vs-external question for the price of a lunch. The spread is enormous, which is why the order above matters. A cap or a hose clamp sits at the trivial end, hoses and a thermostat housing are modest, a water pump or radiator is a middling job, a heater core is often labor-heavy because the dash has to come out, and a head gasket is the big one.
