Brake Pedal Sinks to the Floor: Master Cylinder or Air?

A brake pedal that slowly sinks while you hold it is a commonly misdiagnosed complaint, and an easy one to overspend on. The reflex fix is a new master cylinder, and plenty of owners have replaced one, sometimes two, with no change. What a sinking pedal actually means

Brake fluid cannot be compressed, so a pedal that keeps moving means fluid is going somewhere it shouldn't: past a worn seal in the master cylinder, out through a leak, or into the springiness of trapped air. Each feels different at the pedal. A steady creep under one continuous push is fluid escaping past a seal. A low pedal that rises and firms up when pumped fast is air. A pedal that drops along with the reservoir level is an external leak.

  1. Master cylinder bypassing internally. Fluid slips past the piston seals under pressure, so the pedal creeps down with no visible leak and no fluid loss. Even brand-new: quality issues with reman masters are not rare.
  2. Air in the system. After a brake job, a sloppy bleed, or running the reservoir dry. Air compresses, so the pedal feels spongy and settles low, but it pumps up firm and does not creep endlessly under a steady hold.
  3. External leak. A caliper, wheel cylinder, rusted line, or hose. The reservoir drops, and there is usually wetness somewhere. Also check where the master meets the booster, a leak there hides inside the booster shell.
  4. Air trapped in the ABS modulator. Needs a scan-tool bleed that cycles the modulator valves; a standard bleed cannot reach it. Common after running dry or a master replacement.
  5. Rear brakes badly out of adjustment (drum brakes). Excess shoe travel mimics a low pedal that pumps up, fooling people into bleeding a system with no air in it.

Diagnostic steps (in order)

Two pedal tests and one clamp test localize almost every sinking pedal; only the clamp test needs a tool, proper hose-pinch pliers.

  1. Pump the pedal several times fast. If it rises and firms up, that is air (or drum adjustment), and the fix is a proper bleed, not a master. If pumping changes nothing, air is not your problem.
  2. Hold steady pressure for thirty seconds. A pedal that keeps creeping down under a constant push, with a full reservoir and a flat pump-up test, is fluid bypassing a seal, with the master as prime suspect.
  3. Test it with the engine running, not just off. The booster multiplies your leg force several times over, so a marginal master can hold an engine-off push and still bypass under boost. If it only sinks running, also check the booster vacuum hose for brake fluid: a leaking rear master seal gets drawn into the booster.
  4. Clamp every flexible hose with proper hose-pinch pliers. Most cars have four, one per wheel; solid rear axles often share one rear hose. Pedal goes hard: master and lines are fine, the give is at the wheels. Pedal stays soft: the fault is upstream, the master or air in the ABS unit.
  5. If everything points upstream and the pump-up said air, do a scan-tool ABS bleed. It cycles the modulator valves to push out trapped air, sometimes over two or three passes.
  6. Replacing the master? Bench-bleed it properly first. Skipping this traps air and produces a new-master-same-problem story.

What a fair repair should cost

A bleed is cheap; a master is moderate; letting a shop guess is the expensive option. A proper bleed, including a scan-tool ABS bleed, is typically a modest labour charge. A master cylinder with bench bleeding lands in the low-to-mid hundreds of euros on most cars, and a caliper or hose sits in a similar range per corner. The money trap is sequencing: a shop that replaces the master without the pump-up, hold, and clamp tests is guessing with your money.
